Mitchell was
burned over 65% of his body in a motorcycle accident. His face and
body were rebuilt with the first of 32 sessions of plastic surgery.
With two partners,
Mitchell founded Vermont Castings. This wood stove company put thousands
of people to work and became one of the largest firms in Vermont.
In another
accident four years after the first, Mitchell's private aircraft
crashed on take-off, paralyzing him. He began another uphill struggle.
"When I tell people there were two separate accidents, they are
amazed," he says.
Mitchell was
elected mayor of Crested Butte, Colorado. He led a successful battle
with the world's largest mining company to preserve the scenic beauty
of the surrounding wilderness.
Although today
Mitchell uses a wheelchair, he is a commercial pilot and white water
rafter. He speaks to more than 70 audiences each year all around
the world.
